The first step is to contact your local Chapter. In general, the process to join the Order of the Eastern Star is as follows:

- Contact the local Chapter in your geographical area with which you would like to become a member.
- Petition the local Chapter for membership. The local Chapter will provide the petition for membership form to you.
- The local Chapter will review and investigate your petition for membership and will meet with you to answer any questions you may have about membership.
- The local Chapter will vote on your petition and schedule your initiation into the Chapter at a mutually acceptable time.
- Contact the local Chapter in your geographical area with which you would like to affiliate.
- Petition the local Chapter for affiliation. The local Chapter will provide the petition for affiliation form to you.
- The local Chapter will review and investigate your petition for affiliation and will meet with you to answer any questions you may have about affiliation in the Chapter including becoming a dual or plural member.
- The local Chapter will vote on your petition and schedule your affiliation into the Chapter at a mutually acceptable time.
- A belief in the existence of a Supreme Being (no specific denomination is required)
- Men must be affiliated Master Masons in good standing
- Women must be related to a Master Mason by birth, marriage, or adoption to affiliated Master Masons in good standing, or if deceased were in good standing at the time of their death OR a majority card holder showing membership of at least 3 years in the International Order of Rainbow for Girls or Job's Daughters International OR be sponsored by a sister and brother who are members of the Order.
- Must be 18 years old
- Must have lived in the state for 6 consecutive months (There is no residency requirement for plural membership or affiliation)
